There are two swimming pools on the property: the primary pool near the aquatic sports center with three islands and two-swim-up bars and the "lazy river" pool (aka Golden Pool) offering swim-up access for the Golden Swim-Up Junior Suites. The majority of the rooms have views out over the gardens, jungle, or pools the Golden Swim-Up Junior Suites have direct access to the lazy river pool, and some of the Emerald Junior Suites have lovely ocean views (others are obscured by trees). For this category, the decor lacks wow factor, though it's elegant enough. They have traditional, earth-tone decor incorporating marble, travertine, and granite furniture is typically of dark wood. The 540 rooms are split between the Deluxe, Silver, Golden, Emerald, Diamond, and Imperial categories, and all are spacious, ranging from 516 square feet (the Deluxe Junior Suites) to 1,032 square feet (the Diamond and Imperial Suites). Overall, the resort is well-maintained, though there haven't been any updates since 2007, and some slight wear and tear is visible throughout, such as slightly scuffed flooring. There are multiple fountains around the grounds adding ambience. The decor style of the Valentin is elegant and traditional, with plenty of marble, granite, travertine, flagstone, slate, and grand open spaces.

The downside is that the sprawling size of the resort means getting from one side to another means a 10- to 15-minute hike. The resort has a number of distinct hangout areas: the main hub that's home to the lobby and many of the restaurants and bars the massive main pool (the resort advertises it as one of the largest in Mexico), the quieter lazy river pool, and the beach itself. This is not the fanciest luxury all-inclusive in Riviera Maya, but overall it hits all the right notes, and rates are reasonably competitive for this luxury category - the Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun, The Royal Playa del Carmen, and The Royal Hideaway Playacar can be quite a bit pricier. The different guest tiers can sometimes cause dissatisfaction among those who didn't upgrade, however, especially whenever the choice sunbeds in the Privilege pool and beach areas are not in use.

Many of the hassles associated with all-inclusive resorts (annoying bracelets, watered-down drinks, long waits to make dinner reservations) are absent here, and guests can expect top-shelf liquor and great food variety. It stands out for its truly excellent pools, great stretch of beach, and beautiful grounds. The Valentin Imperial Maya draws plenty of repeat guests, and for good reason.
